Mashiko Ware: Black Glaze Shinogi Carved Red Enamel Flower Vase

A vase with eight equally carved concave surfaces in a vertical arrangement. Carving concave surfaces vertically is called “shinogi.” The term “shinogi” refers to the carvings on the blade of a Japanese sword, and this technique name is also used in ceramics. Like previous works, red enamel is applied by brushing it onto the black glaze. The vase has a short neck and mouth, and its overall height is small which provides stability for arranged flowers. It is ideal for arranging a small number of flowers.
