Hamadagama / Hamada Kiln

Hamadagama / Hamada Kiln

The Hamada Kiln was established in 1931 in Mashiko, a place known as the birthplace of Mashiko ware. Currently, the third generation, Tomoo Hamada, is creating a significant number of works. Shoji Hamada (1894-1978), the first-generation ceramic artist, was one of the leaders of the Folk Craft Movement and is also a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property. After Shoji Hamada's passing, his second son, Shinsaku Hamada (1929-), who had assisted Shoji as a successor during his lifetime, and Shinsaku's second son, Tomoo Hamada (1967-), have continued the artistic tradition.

Over three generations, Shinsaku and Tomoo have introduced new creations while inheriting the materials, techniques, and pottery style passed down from Shoji, thus maintaining and evolving the legacy of Shoji Hamada.
