Mashiko Ware: Salt Glaze Brushed Tea Bowl

After carving and shaping the tea bowl, white slips are applied vertically with a brush. The brush strokes are not systematically applied but rather in a natural and varied manner. Following this, the rim is painted with iron slip, and then it is fired in a salt kiln. The distinctive features include the glossy texture from the salt and the changing expression of the white slips' brush strokes. While incorporating traditional Western techniques in the body, the tea bowl exudes an elegant and refined style. The contrast of the yuzu skin on the inside adds beauty to the piece.
