Tear jars were used in ancient Rome to hold tears of sorrow. They were used to hold the tears shed by wives in memory of their husbands who had gone off to war. But it was also a vessel for tears of joy. The lovely shape was inspired by the pots fired in Arita during the early Imari period in the 160s. Although small, this pot has a strong presence, and even flowers picked in the field would make a wonderful addition to your daily life as a single flower vase.
