Ri Sanpei Kiln / Arita Ware

Ri Sanpei Kiln / Arita Ware

Arita ware (有田焼, Arita-yaki) and the Ri Sanpei Kiln (李参平窯, Lee Sam-Pyeong Kiln) both play important roles in the history of ceramics in Japan and Korea, and they are directly connected. Specifically, Ri Sanpei, the Korean potter, is said to have influenced the development of Arita ware.

In the early 17th century, the techniques for making white porcelain in Korea were adapted and developed in Arita, Japan. Japanese potters, inspired by the skills and styles introduced by Korean artisans like Ri Sanpei, began creating Arita ware (a type of Japanese porcelain), including the famous Imari ware.
