AREA × OBI PORCELAIN – Timeless Japanese Traditions and Customs, Encapsulated in a Beautiful Pair of Hina Dolls

AREA has unveiled an original Hina doll set inspired by the uniquely beautiful Japanese tradition of seasonal celebrations—rituals that mark turning points in the year, invite reflection, and express prayers for family happiness and the healthy growth of children. This spirit has been thoughtfully reinterpreted to harmonize with contemporary living.

Each Hina doll is formed from exquisite white porcelain shaped by skilled artisans, then delicately hand-painted one by one. Layering the shifting colors of nature with great care, these dolls are created with the hope that they will be cherished as precious treasures and loved for many years in everyday life.

This one-of-a-kind Hina doll set was born from a collaboration between AREA, an interior brand that continues to express Japanese traditional beauty through original design, and OBI PORCELAIN, which reimagines the culture of seasonal celebrations in a way that complements modern lifestyles.

OBI PORCELAIN and Seto Ware

Seto ware is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is a remarkably rare production area that has continuously produced ceramics for nearly 1,000 years. One of its defining characteristics is the production of both pottery and porcelain, from which the Japanese term “setomono” originated. The clay sourced in Seto is among the finest in the world, containing very little iron and firing to a pure white, allowing the colors of painted glazes and patterns to stand out beautifully. Using custom-blended clay and molds fired by the hands of master artisans, OBI PORCELAIN’s wish to create “precious treasures to be displayed year after year” is layered into rich, elegant colors—giving rise to each individual and irreplaceable Hina doll.

Traditional Japanese Colors Inspired by the Four Seasons

From cherry blossoms in spring, the soft green of leaves illuminated by a hazy moon, the gentle shimmer of petals glistening with morning dew, vivid autumn foliage, to landscapes dressed in pure white snow—Japan has long discovered beauty within the transitions of its four seasons. The traditional color names inspired by this rich sensibility are themselves poetic and elegant. The refined color layering of kasane robes, born from the keen perception and aesthetic sensibilities of women in the Heian period, reflects this heritage. AREA presents a new expression of these uniquely Japanese, delicate colors—visible and tangible precisely because Japan is a land of four seasons.
